Atelier Calder

2019
Copper, salt, cement, silex, soap, sythetic motor oil

While in residency at Atelier Calder from May-July of 2019, I worked on several projects, the largest being a single site-responsive work intended to sensitize viewers to the changing conditions of light and air the studio. Cast concrete elements divide the space like a partially excavated ruin and create an open display system for a group of objects including silex stones, polished copper plated hardware, and parts of an oxidized brass chandelier. A pair of three meter copper fountains punctuate the vertical volume of the room, one pumping synthetic motor oil and the other liquid soap. These sister works exist in opposition, as the honey colored oil protects and accentuates the golden color of the metal, while the soap immediately oxidizes it, itself transforming from a light yellow to an aqua green in the short span of its decent. At the back left corner of the room, by the smallest window in the studio, an aluminum tube cast in a pair of cement blocks creates a gently moving aperture through which a constant breeze blows into the studio and then back out into the landscape.
